JSTOR er et nettbibliotek for vitenskaplige artikler, men de har også et egent magasin JSTOR Daily som tar for seg forskningnytt, bakgrunnsstoff og mer generelle artikler. Magasinet har en ny artikkel ute med tittel The Scholarly Study of Scientology, som handler om hvorfor scientologi, på tross av enorm interesse i pressen, er så lite studert av akademikere. Artikkelen gir klare svar på hvorfor så mange akademikere skriver så “snille” artikler om organisasjonen.
Artiklen har blant annet intervjuer med Douglas Cowan (Researching Scientology, 2004), Hugh Urban (The Church of Scientology: A History of a New Religion, 2011), Stephen Kent (When Scholars Know Sin, 1998) og Gordon Melton (Studies in Contemporary Religions, 2000). Kanskje den mest talende uttalelsen i artikkelen er fra Melton, som er kjent blant kritikere som en støttespiller for organisasjonen:
“I wrote it because other people asked to contribute to the series it’s in turned it down,” he recalled recently. “There were scholars who were openly saying, ‘I don’t want to deal with Scientology; I don’t have time to deal with the legal issues,’ and the like. And it was a pain. You waste a lot of time. My little book was a very small little book, but the amount of time it took just to do that little book, and the amount of time it took after the book came out responding to different people… In the end, if I had the choice to do it again, I wouldn’t do it.”
